Guided walking safari group watching an elephant

Beyond the game drive

Experiences

The vehicle is only one way to see Tanzania. Here are the others — on foot, by boat, by balloon, by bicycle, and around a fire with the people who have lived here longest.

Guided walking safari group watching an elephant

01

Walking safaris

Step out of the vehicle with an armed ranger and a guide who reads tracks, dung and birdsong. Walking changes the scale of everything: a giraffe at 80 metres is a very different animal on foot. Available in Arusha National Park, Tarangire, the Serengeti and the southern parks.

02

Cultural experiences

Time with the Hadzabe hunter-gatherers and the Datoga blacksmiths near Lake Eyasi, or a Maasai boma in the Ngorongoro highlands. These visits are arranged with the communities themselves, not staged for cameras; you go as a guest and leave with a better sense of who this land belongs to.

03

Photographic safaris

A vehicle configured for cameras — bean bags, fewer seats, a guide who understands angles and light — and a schedule that puts you in the right place at dawn and dusk instead of at breakfast.

04

Hot-air balloon flights

Lift off before sunrise and drift over the Serengeti as the plains light up beneath you, then land to a bush breakfast. An hour you will still be describing years later.

05

Boat safaris

On the Rufiji River in Nyerere National Park, or Lake Manyara in the wet season: hippo, crocodile, elephant drinking at the bank and the best birding in Tanzania — all at water level.

06

Biking safaris

Cycle through village land and open savannah on the edges of the parks, past zebra and wildebeest, with a guide and a support vehicle. A different pace, and a good way to meet people along the road.

07

Chimpanzee trekking

Mahale and Gombe, on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, are two of the best places on earth to sit with habituated wild chimpanzees. Remote, unhurried and unlike anything else in Tanzania.

08

Zanzibar & the coast

Finish a safari with Stone Town's alleys and spice farms, then the beaches of the east coast or the quiet of Saadani, where elephants walk to the Indian Ocean. Most of our 10-day itineraries end here.
